History is all around us. In our streets, in our fields, in
our language and outlook on life. The past is what writes our present, and the
most innocuous things can tell us so much about our heritage and culture, both
as individuals and as a society as a whole.
So much of history is now limited to books, museums and
antique shops, but a look around any locality can reveal countless stories of
the past – of people, trades, pastimes, the way of life which defined a
community.
In conjunction with the release of my new book, Preston on
Stour: A Two Thousand Year History, to be published this year, I am
exploring one hundred features which reveal the story of one rural village.
Some are unique to Preston; others are far-reaching and relate to life in
Britain as a whole.
